11 Confirmed Dead in Bondi Beach Shooting as Australian PM Condemns ‘Evil Antisemitic Terror Attack’

At least 11 people have been killed in a shooting that targeted the Jewish community during a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australian police have confirmed.

New South Wales Police said the attack occurred on Saturday evening during a public celebration marking the start of Hanukkah, which had drawn more than 1,000 attendees to the beach. A further 29 people were taken to hospital, including a child. Two police officers were also among the injured and remain in serious condition.

Authorities said two gunmen were involved in the attack. One suspect was killed at the scene, while a second is in critical condition in hospital. Police have formally declared the incident a terrorist attack and confirmed it was deliberately aimed at Sydney’s Jewish community.

Investigators also discovered a vehicle linked to the deceased attacker containing improvised explosive devices. A bomb disposal unit was deployed, and police later confirmed the devices had been secured and removed.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly condemned the shooting, describing it as “an act of evil antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation.”

“There is no place in Australia for this vile act of violence and hate,” Albanese said, adding that the attack had occurred on a day that should have been one of joy and celebration.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said mass shootings are extremely rare in Australia, making the incident particularly shocking. He confirmed a full counter-terrorism investigation is underway, with authorities examining whether others may have been involved.

Security has been increased across Sydney, and police have urged the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue.
