At least 100 militants have been killed in an operation launched by the Chadian army a fortnight ago against Boko Haram jihadists holed up in the islands of Lake Chad.

“117 terrorists have been killed, two Chadian soldiers died and two others were wounded” in the operation, said army spokesman Colonel Azem Bermendoa Agouna, adding the operation was ongoing.

“We destroyed their boats and seized various weapons during the operation,” he said.

Chad has deployed thousands of soldiers alongside troops from neighbors Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger to tackle the militant group whose six-year insurgency has killed thousands.
