Abuja, NIGERIA – Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally briefed President Bola Tinubu on her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
Okay News gathered that the meeting took place on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at the President’s private residence in Lagos. During the private session, the former Senator discussed her vision and strategic plans for Ogun State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sources familiar with the discussion revealed that the visit served as a formal notification to the President, who is the national leader of the APC, regarding her candidacy. Obasanjo-Bello, who recently defected to the APC, has been vocal about her readiness to govern, describing herself in recent interviews as “the most prepared” and a “formidable” contender for the seat.
Her declaration comes as political activities for the 2027 cycle begin to intensify in Ogun State. If successful, she aims to become Nigeria’s first elected female governor. The meeting with President Tinubu follows a significant public appearance by her father, Olusegun Obasanjo, alongside the President in Iperu-Remo last Saturday during the commissioning of the Gateway International Airport.
