The ban on street trading comes into effect today following the directive by Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on the enforcement of Law against hawking in the state.

Most streets and highways were deserted over the weekend as traders refrained from operating over the fear of being arrested.

The Lagos State Task Force on Environment and Special Offences vowed to enforce the new ruling today which will see any persons found to be street trading, immediately detained.

No arrests as of yet have been made however it has been confirmed that the task-force unit will launch a total enforcement throughout the metropolis.
News24 Nigeria reported that the new drive was to reduce traffic congestion on the highways, often caused by the activities of hawkers.

Section 1 of the Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law, 2003, restricted street trading and hawking in the metropolis.
