Nigeria’s percentage was said to be 49 percent of Nigerian women got married or are married under the age of 18. The figures are from 2013.

Unicef warned that marrying at such an early age can be harmful to girls as they have a higher chance of having complications such as fistula and stillborn babies.

Mohamed Fall, a UNICEF country representative revealed a nation-wide Campaign to End Child Marriage at a ceremony in Abuja.

He said: “With 49 per cent of Nigerian women married under the age of 18, according to latest figures from 2013, Nigeria has the world’s highest number of child brides.”
