The Nigerian Police has explained why it prevented the Makarfi-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its meeting at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command said it prevented the Peoples Democratic Party from holding its meeting at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, to avoid a break-down of law and order.

The command in a statement by its spokesman, Anjuguri Manzah, said it received credible intelligence that the two factions in the party planned to use the venue for their meetings, noting that this may lead to a violent clash.

It said, “Credible intelligence at the disposal of the FCT Police Command indicated that the two factions i.e. the Ahmed Makarfi group and the Ali Modu Sheriff group scheduled to hold their meetings at the International Conference Centre today (Monday) and this can lead to serious clash and breach of public peace.”

He added that the police intervened to prevent breakdown of law and order by advising the ICC management not to allow any of the group to use the place for any meeting.

“However, the command provided visible security for the Makarfi group when they relocated to Ekiti State Government lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, despite not been informed,” the spokesman explained.
