Lagos Ranked 29th Most Expensive City In World

An annual survey conducted by Mercer consulting has placed the capital of Angola, Luanda, as the most expensive city to live in while it placed Lagos as the 29th.

The report, released on Wednesday, focused on the cost of living for expatriate workers in world cities, cost of housing, transport, clothing and fast food.

Luanda knocked Hong Kong off the top spot in the annual survey making it the second time in three years the city topped the survey.

Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria, is ranked 29th out of 209 cities and is not also among the top five African cities that are most expensive.

According to Reuters, the survey found the cost of renting a two-bedroom apartment suitable for expatriates in Luanda at £4,800 ($6,055) per month, while a fast food hamburger meal priced at £11.50.

As Luanda rose, all UK cities fell significantly in this year’s rankings, with 30th-ranked London dropping 13 places from 2016.

The top ten cities include: LUANDA, Angola; HONG KONG; TOKYO, Japan; ZURICH, Switzerland; SINGAPORE; SEOUL, South Korea; GENEVA, Switzerland; SHANGHAI, China; NEW YORK, U.S. and BERN,Switzerland

Africa’s most expensive cities: Luanda (1st) is followed by Victoria in the Seychelles (14th), N’Djamena in Chad (16th), and Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (18th).

For those in the market for a cheaper expatriate experience, the survey found the least expensive cities are Tunis, ranked 209th, followed by Kyrgyzstan capital Bishkek and Skopje in Macedonia.
