Saraki Discloses Possible Reshuffling Of Senate Committees

Senate President Bukola Saraki on Friday disclosed an impending reshuffling of the make-up of the 68 Senate standing committees.

This was disclosed during Friday’s plenary session and would likely happen before the red chamber goes for the next recess.

Saraki expressed his agreement with Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu’s assessment that senators are unable to attend committee meeting because they are a part of more than at a time.

This was in reaction to the report of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, over the Federal University of Maritime Studies Bill, which was read by the committee chairman, Senator Barau Jibrin (APC-Kano).

The report was only signed by 12 of the 21 senators that make up the committee.

Ekweremadu said: “It is unusual, the number of senators, 21, that are in the tertiary institutions committee.

“It is unhealthy that many senators will be in many committees that would make it difficult for them to attend meetings”.

To which, Saraki replied that “I agree with you in entirety. You will recall that at the leadership we have discussed it.

“We must clean it up and this must be done before we go for our recess.”
