World number one Rafael Nadal breezed through Russian teenager Andrey Rublev to set up a potential US Open semi-final against longtime rival Roger Federer.

The 31-year-old top seed produced a strong showing to see off 19-year-old Rublev 6-1 6-2 6-2 in one hour and 37 minutes.

Nadal will confront Federer for the first time in US Open if the Swiss overcomes Juan Martin del Potro.

Federer and Del Potro meet in the last quarter-final on Thursday.

“It’s strange we’ve never played here,” said Nadal.

“Of course it is a match I want to see. Two great players and I will be waiting for Roger or Juan Martin.”
