Ousted president of Egypt Mohamed Morsi was on Saturday sentenced to three years in prison for “insulting the judiciary”.

He was sentenced alongside 19 other defendants including three journalists, activists and members of parliament.

Morsi, who won the 2012 election on the platform of the Islamist group the Muslim Brotherhood, was ousted in July 2013, when the incumbent, General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi led a coup d’état to displace him and take over power.

He was thereafter sentenced to a total of 45 years in prison in two trials.

Speaking with the AFP, Morsi’s counsel indicated his intention to appeal the verdict.
