Bishop Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese has revealed why the North will still vote en masse for President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

He attributed the opinion to the pervasive belief in the region that Buhari is the one person who can bring the elite to order.

According to him, the average Northerner views the elite as untouchable hence the belief that Buhari can do for them what they are unable to do. He added that this mindset is the reason Sharia law was embraced as they believe in the eyes such a law, everyone is eual.

Speaking with Punch, he said, “They will still vote for Buhari because they see him as the only one who can help bring their derelict elite to order.

“It is a strange appeal but that is it. They believe their corrupt elite are above the law.

“They were seduced with Sharia because they believed it was going to help them punish their own elite, who they see as being above the law of Nigeria. These are the issues.

“Indeed, the Buhari project presents us with an interesting view.”
