Canada has refuted claims that Justin Trudeau, the country’s Prime Minister, is begging President Muhammadu Buhari to let one million Nigerians leave for Canada through a new Employment and Migration Programme arranged for immigrants.

The High Commission of Canada to Nigeria in a tweet on Tuesday noted that “If you’ve seen this link on your social media timeline, don’t fall for it. This story is not true.”

How the report started

Dele Momodu, a publisher of the Ovation Television, shared the fake news on his Twitter handle which gained so much attention.

The report surfaced from a news website saying that the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is requesting for more Nigerians after Nigeria immigrants have helped in Canada’s growth in all sectors of its economy.

The news platform quoted the PM:

“We can’t undermine or overlook the contribution of immigrants in Canada’s development especially our brothers and sisters from Nigeria.”

Another platform also credited the a statement to Shadrack Scott, head of Canadian Labour Department.

“The programme’s website will be launched next week and all available jobs will be listed. Currently, there are over 6 million vacancies and we are hoping that Buhari allows at least one million people from Nigeria.”

But all the reports have been refuted and labelled as “fake news” according to the High Commission of Canada to Nigeria.
