The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has confirmed receiving the nomination of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala among candidates seeking to become the director-general of the organisation.

WTO confirmed Okonjo-Iweala’s candidacy in a statement via its website on Tuesday.

“Nigeria, on 9 June 2020, nominated Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the post of WTO Director-General to succeed the current Director-General, Mr Roberto Azevêdo, who has announced he will step down on 31 August 2020,” the statement read.

Okay.ng recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari recommended Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The endorsement had since been faulted by Egypt stating that the executive decision of the African Union (AU) which had set a deadline of November 30, 2019, for African countries to nominate candidates had been breached.

The WTO on Tuesday noted that nominations are still opened until July 8, 2020.
