The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, announced on Tuesday that N200 million had been put aside by the government to support local health research.

At the ongoing 2022 Annual International Conference on Health Advances, Innovation and Research (ICHAIR), hosted by the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Abayomi made his presence known in Lagos (NIMR).

Okay.ng understands that ICHAIR is a gathering of stakeholders and biomedical specialists from both within and outside of Nigeria.

He uttered, “Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has provided us with N200 million to support indigenous research in the state.

“We are currently reviewing the submitted applications to create a shortlist of candidates, and the grant recipients will be revealed next month. “This will start the process for new research, inventions, and health-related advancements.”

The governor also contributed N300 million to COVID-19 research, which has generated 40 journal publications and was made possible by collaboration with a number of medical institutions like NIMR.

The commissioner continued by saying that there were also plans to establish a state-wide desk for intellectual property.

Our researchers must comprehend the significance of their intellectual work, he continued, thus we are working on an intellectual property desk.

Abayomi exhorted scholars in the nation to do studies that will bring solutions to problems that were unique to our field.
