The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has responded to the resignation of Doyin Okupe as the director-general of the LP presidential campaign council.

In a letter addressed to Okupe, Obi thanked him for his contribution to the campaign and expressed his respect for Okupe’s decision to step down in order to avoid any distractions.

“It is a decision which I respect,” Obi wrote in the letter.

“The story of the historic effort, which has galvanised millions of countrymen, particularly youths, cannot be complete without mentioning Okupe’s commitment, dedication, and the boundless energy he brought to bear.”

Obi went on to express his hope that the legal system would eventually allow Okupe to clear his name.

“It is my sincere hope that the legal system would afford Okupe an opportunity to eventually clear his name,” he wrote.

Okupe had on Tuesday announced his decision to resign from his role as director-general of the LP presidential campaign council after he was convicted over money laundering charges.

In his announcement, he cited personal reasons and the need to avoid any distractions to Obi’s campaign.

In a statement on Tuesday, he thanked the Labour Party and its leaders for the opportunity to serve and promised to continue to support the party’s efforts to bring about positive change in the country.

The Labour Party has not yet announced a replacement for Okupe as director-general of the presidential campaign council.

It is unclear at this time how his resignation will impact the party’s efforts in the lead up to the presidential election.
