UK Set to Impose Restrictions on Nigerian Students Bringing Family Members – Report

The United Kingdom is reportedly on the verge of implementing new restrictions that could prohibit Nigerian students and students from other nationalities studying in the UK from bringing their families with them.

The impending crackdown, which is expected to be announced this week, aims to curb the surge in net migration and address concerns raised by Tory MPs about the escalating numbers.

According to an exclusive report by The Sun UK, the impending clampdown will specifically target masters students and a significant number of postgraduate students, prohibiting them from bringing their family members along.

However, the ban will not apply to PhD students, who are considered highly skilled and typically pursue courses lasting between three and five years.

The UK media house revealed that net migration into the country has recently skyrocketed to an alarming one million, prompting Tory MPs to call upon Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to take decisive action.

Faced with these mounting numbers, UK ministers are expected to unveil their plans for immigration control on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Sun reports that Rishi Sunak, the UK Prime Minister, is anticipated to address the issue head-on, clarifying that these figures represent an inheritance from his predecessor, as they pertain to the year ending December 2022 – just two months after he assumed office.

It appears that the UK has witnessed a surge in the number of individuals entering the country by leveraging their relatives’ student visas.

“Students brought 135,788 family members to Britain last year – nine times more than in 2019,” states The Sun, shedding light on the staggering increase.

“Last year alone, 59,053 Nigerian students brought over 60,923 relatives.”
