The recent announcement of the Federal Government’s review of school fees for Federal Government Colleges, also known as “Unity Schools,” has ignited various debates and concerns among parents, guardians, and citizens nationwide.

As the situation continues to be a subject of interest, here are eight essential facts to understand about the new school fees regime.

  1. May 25th, 2023 Memo: The memo for the fee increase was issued by the Federal Ministry of Education on May 25th, 2023. This clarifies that the decision did not originate from the current administration, but rather predates it.
  2. Impact on New Students: The upward review of fees primarily affects new students enrolling in Federal Government Colleges. Traditionally, these students are expected to cover sundry charges, which include expenses like school uniforms.
  3. Tuition Remains Free: The memo affirms that tuition in Unity Schools remains free. The reviewed fees are for sundry charges and boarding costs for new students only.
  4. Boarding House Fees: Boarding house students will be required to pay N30,000 per term. This amount is intended to cover essential boarding expenses, such as meals. Considering the significant cost of providing three meals a day for an average of 80-90 days, the government is heavily subsidizing boarding students’ meals.
  5. Different Fees for Boarding and Day Students: New students in boarding houses will pay N100,000, while day students will pay N70,000. Returning students, whether in boarding or day school, will pay significantly lower fees compared to new students.
  6. Lower Fees for Returning Students: As part of the fee structure, returning students will benefit from reduced fees in both boarding and day schools, reflecting the government’s commitment to affordable education.
  7. Session Coverage: The amount payable is divided into three line items, encompassing the entire academic session. This approach ensures transparency and clarity in the fee structure.
  8. Uniform Fee for JSS1 and SS1 Students: Only students in JSS1 and SS1 will be required to pay N25,000 for their new school uniforms, as mentioned in the memo.
