Lateef Fagbemi, born on 16 July 1959, is a distinguished Nigerian legal practitioner known for his exceptional contributions to the field of law and his role in some of the nation’s most significant legal battles. With an illustrious career spanning over 38 years, Fagbemi has earned a reputation as a legal luminary, adept strategist, and staunch defender of justice.

Educational Journey and Achievements

Hailing from Ijagbo in Kwara State, Lateef Fagbemi embarked on his academic journey by graduating with a Second Class Upper degree in Law from the University of Jos, Plateau State, in 1984. He further honed his legal expertise by obtaining a master’s degree in Law (LLM) from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 1987.

Rise to Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN)

Fagbemi’s dedication to the legal profession was evident from the beginning of his career. After completing his law degree, he was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in August 1985, setting the stage for a remarkable journey in the legal field. He achieved the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) after just 10 years of active legal practice, becoming the youngest person at the time to attain this distinction.

Contributions to Legal Practice

Early in his career, Lateef Fagbemi honed his legal skills under the guidance of renowned lawyer Afe Babalola, which laid a strong foundation for his subsequent accomplishments. He founded his law firm, Lateef Fagbemi & Co (also known as Temitope Chambers), which has now been operating for 21 years. The firm has made a name for itself by handling complex cases across the nation, with offices in Ibadan, Lagos, and Abuja.

Fagbemi’s areas of legal expertise include arbitration, alternative dispute resolution, commercial law, and land disputes. He has successfully handled high-profile political and corruption-related cases, demonstrating his prowess in navigating intricate legal matters.

Defender of Political Interests

Lateef Fagbemi has played a significant role in Nigeria’s political landscape through his legal advocacy. While not openly associated with the All Progressives Congress (APC), he has been deeply involved in the party’s legal battles since its inception in 2013. Notably, he played a pivotal role in defending Muhammadu Buhari’s candidacy against legal challenges in the run-up to the 2015 presidential election, securing the victory that led to Buhari’s election as President.

Fagbemi’s legal acumen was again on display in 2019 when he led the APC’s legal team in defending President Buhari’s reelection against challenges brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The Supreme Court’s affirmation of Buhari’s victory underscored Fagbemi’s skillful legal representation.

Legacy and Influence

Lateef Fagbemi’s contributions extend beyond legal battles. As a member of reputable local and international Bar associations, he has contributed to the development of Nigeria’s jurisprudence through teaching, lectures, and consultancy services for government institutions and state governments. His dedication to the rule of law, justice, and the growth of the legal profession has solidified his place as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s legal landscape.
