President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of nine new Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The new appointees are slated to serve for a term of five years, pending confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.

A statement issued by the presidential spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, outlined that these appointments were made in line with the powers vested in the President by Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended) and Section 6 of the Electoral Act (2022).

The newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners are as follows:

  • Isah Shaka Ehimeakne — Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner
  • Bamidele Agbede — Ekiti State Resident Electoral Commissioner
  • Jani Adamu Bello — Gombe State Resident Electoral Commissioner
  • Taiye Ilayasu — Kwara State Resident Electoral Commissioner
  • Bunmi Omoseyindemi — Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner
  • Yahaya Bello — Nasarawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner
  • Mohammed Yalwa — Niger State Resident Electoral Commissioner
  • Anugbum Onuoha — Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner
  • Abubakar Fawa Dambo — Zamfara State Resident Electoral Commissioner

President Tinubu emphasized his expectation for the newly appointed RECs to uphold the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct in the execution of their duties.

These expectations align with his commitment to establish a new benchmark of transparent, equitable, and conflict-free electoral practices in Nigeria.
