Protest Erupt in Kano Over Appeal Court Ruling Sacking Gov Kabir Yusuf

Kano State witnessed widespread protests following the ousting of Governor Abba Yusuf by an Appeal Court, resulting in police intervention to disperse demonstrators in the Dan Agundi area on Wednesday.

The recent demonstrations arose after the public release of the Certified True Copy of the judgment, seemingly conflicting with the appellate court’s ruling. Protesters, expressing fervent demands for justice, asserted their readiness to go to extreme lengths.

In the wake of Governor Yusuf’s removal, Kano’s police authorities had pledged to take strict measures against any protesting faction in the state.

The electoral timeline revealed that in March 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as the victor. However, the state’s governorship election petitions tribunal nullified his win in September.

Months later, the Court of Appeal upheld this decision, citing Yusuf’s absence from the NNPP’s register, thereby disqualifying him from contesting. The court consequently declared Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful winner, sparking considerable tension within the North-Western state.
