The Defence Headquarters has expressed deep regret over the civilian deaths resulting from an accidental bombing in Tudun Biri, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Sunday.

The incident claimed the lives of at least 85 villagers.

In a statement by the Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, the Defence Headquarters viewed civilian deaths during military operations as a needless tragedy.

Buba detailed the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident, citing the observation of untoward activities and the movement of terrorists in the area.

According to the statement, personnel noticed suspicious movements of terrorists around Ligarma, a terrorist-infested area in Kaduna State.

The statement said Aerial surveillance revealed the gathering of individuals using tactics and modus operandi synonymous with terrorists.

The Defence Headquarters asserted that the terrorists’ presence posed a significant threat to key infrastructure and residents in the area, prompting the military to take preventive action.

The statement emphasized that the military makes extensive efforts to avoid civilian casualties during operations.

Maj. Gen. Buba explained, “It should be noted that terrorists often deliberately embed themselves within civilian population centres for the civilian population to bear the consequences of their atrocities. Nevertheless, the Nigerian military does its best at all times to distinguish between civilians and terrorists.”

To prevent such tragedies, the military has encouraged residents to alert troops about their activities, especially in areas known to be infested with terrorists and their sympathizers.

The Defence Headquarters reiterated its commitment to operating in line with international laws and emphasized the military’s determination to eradicate terrorists from the country.

Maj. Gen. Buba concluded, “The armed forces will continue to operate consistent with international law as it always has done. It will also continue its determined and cautious progress in eradicating terrorists from our land. These terrorists, as part of their tactics, disguise themselves as civilians to perpetrate terror. Accordingly, we will continue to find innovative solutions to the challenges faced in the conduct of operations.”
