Former President Goodluck Jonathan has defended his endorsement of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri’s re-election in the November 11, 2023, off-cycle governorship election, stating that it was the right decision considering the governor’s widespread support among the people.

Jonathan expressed his stance during a visit by Governor Diri to his residence in Yenagoa, the state capital, where he reiterated that supporting Diri’s re-election was a decision he stood by without any apologies.

Acknowledging the appreciation extended by Governor Diri for his support, Jonathan highlighted the necessity of his action.

He specifically praised Diri’s efforts in curbing the alarming level of unrest in Yenagoa town, citing the importance of maintaining security as a precursor for attracting investments.

Reflecting on his own tenure as governor of the state, Jonathan acknowledged the challenges faced and stressed the importance of allowing Governor Diri to continue his work for the benefit of Bayelsa.

He urged Diri to remain committed to meeting the high expectations of his supporters, emphasizing the principle that significant responsibility necessitates corresponding efforts for success.

Accompanying the former President during the visit was his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, who joined in receiving Governor Diri and his delegation.
