President Bola Tinubu has conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following his triumphant re-election.

Tshisekedi secured an impressive 73.34 percent of the votes in the December 20 poll, as announced by the head of the national election commission, Denis Kadima.

In a statement released on Saturday by the presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu praised the government and the people of the DRC for ensuring the success of the election.

The statement highlighted the commendable conduct of the elections, stating that democracy is not only thriving but also sustainable in Africa.

“The President also congratulates the people of DR Congo for deepening democratic norms by exercising their rights without resorting to acts inimical to the sustenance of democracy,” the statement reads.

“It is welcoming that the last elections in DR Congo were well-concluded. Democracy is sustainable on the continent. I congratulate President Tshisekedi on his victory. The President has demonstrated statesmanship in his handling of regional and continental matters. Africa will overcome any challenge with governance by popular consent, and democracy will thrive.”

President Tshisekedi is set to be sworn in on January 20.

Notably, his initial election in 2019 marked a historic moment for the Democratic Republic of Congo, as it was the first time an opposition candidate emerged as president since the country gained independence in June 1960.
