Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has secured qualification for the women’s basketball event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The qualification was confirmed following Belgium’s victory over Senegal on Friday at the ongoing 2024 Olympics qualification tournament in Belgium.

Despite a loss to the US with a scoreline of 100-46 in their second game at the competition, D’Tigress clinched the Olympic ticket thanks to a favorable result in another match in the group.

Earlier in the tournament, Nigeria defeated Senegal 72-65 in their opening game, which provided the team with a significant advantage over their West African counterparts.

This marks Nigeria’s third appearance in the women’s basketball event at the Olympic Games. D’Tigress previously qualified for the Athens 2004 Olympics and featured in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

However, the team is yet to secure a victory in Olympic competition. In 2004, they endured a challenging campaign, losing all five games and conceding over 400 points. Similarly, in Tokyo, D’Tigress suffered defeats against France (87-62), the US (81-72), and Japan (102-83).

While D’Tigress celebrates their qualification, Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, failed to secure a spot at the Paris Games after falling short in the pre-qualifiers for the Olympics.

The 2024 Olympics is scheduled to take place between July 26 and August 11, with D’Tigress poised to represent Nigeria on the global stage once again.
