Following the funeral service of the late Herbert Wigwe in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has pledged the state government’s backing to immortalize the deceased by supporting Wigwe University.

Herbert Wigwe, the former Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, established Wigwe University in Isiokpo, his hometown in Rivers State, before his tragic demise in a helicopter crash in California in February.

Governor Fubara, speaking after the funeral church service in Isiokpo, emphasized the state’s commitment to ensuring that Wigwe’s legacy lives on through the university. He reiterated the government’s dedication to collaborating with the Wigwe Foundation to preserve the late entrepreneur’s vision.

Dignitaries present at the funeral service included governors, former governors, federal lawmakers, and captains of industries. Among them were Kayode Fayemi, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Bukola Saraki, Aliko Dangote, Sanusi Lamido, Alex Otti, Dapo Abiodun, and Babajide Sawno-Olu, along with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, James Ibori, CEO of GTCO Holdings, Segun Agbaje, and others.

Governor Fubara also seized the opportunity to reflect on the broader significance of Wigwe’s passing, questioning the political class’s relentless pursuit of power at the expense of meaningful impact on society. He urged introspection among politicians, emphasizing the fleeting nature of power and the imperative to prioritize service to the people.

Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, his son Chizi, and former Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group), Abimbola Ogunbanjo, were among the occupants of the Airbus Helicopter EC 130B4 that tragically crashed near Halloran Springs, California, on February 9, 2024.
