Fresh Collapse of National Grid Causes Power Outage Across Nigeria

Electricity distribution companies across Nigeria reported a loss of power supply to their customers on Monday, following a fresh collapse of the national grid.

The grid shutdown resulted in a significant reduction in power generation, with only 64.70 megawatts (MW) being generated as of 2:42 am on Monday, according to officials of some of the Distribution Companies (DisCos).

Data from the Independent System Operator (ISO) revealed that shortly after the collapse, the grid was generating a mere 266.50 MW of electricity from Okpai, Geregu, and Ibom power plants.

Confirming the collapse, Jos Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) issued a statement, attributing the outage within its franchise states to the loss of power supply from the national grid. Dr. Friday Adakole Elijah, the company’s Head of Corporate Affairs, expressed hope for the swift restoration of the grid to ensure normal power supply to customers.

Similarly, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) acknowledged the collapse in a statement titled “NOTICE OF TOTAL SYSTEM COLLAPSE.”

The EEDC stated that the collapse, which occurred at 2:41 am on Monday, resulted in the loss of supply to all its interface Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stations, affecting customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.

However, the company noted that efforts were underway to gradually resolve the situation, with supply being restored at the Awada TCN station in Onitsha at 7:30 am.

As of press time, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had not issued a confirmation of the collapse.
