The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced its participation in the ongoing nationwide strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The strike, which began on June 3, 2024, has significantly disrupted government and commercial activities across Nigeria.

Emmanuel Osodeke, the president of ASUU, directed university lecturers to join the strike in solidarity with the broader labor movement.

“The NLC has declared an indefinite strike action beginning from Monday, 3rd June 2024, as a result of the failure of government to conclude the renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal of hike in electricity tariff,” Osodeke stated.

Osodeke emphasized the need for unified action, urging all ASUU branches to actively participate.

“Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate member of Congress. Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilize all members to participate in the strike action,” he directed.

The strike, driven by demands for a new minimum wage and a reversal of the increased electricity tariff, has seen widespread support from various sectors.
