Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has ordered the release of 110 inmates from the Nigerian Correctional Centre in the state, exercising his prerogative of mercy powers conferred on him by the 1999 Constitution.

This move is part of activities marking this year’s Democracy Day and the governor’s one year in office.

During a visit to the Kaduna State Correctional Centre, Governor Sani was accompanied by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), who commended the governor’s decision. Falana also appealed to state chief judges to conduct periodic inspections of police stations to address illegal detention and urged governors to prioritize the rehabilitation of correctional centres.

The Kaduna Correctional Centre, built in 1915 with a capacity of 500 inmates, currently holds over 3,000 inmates, with those awaiting trial making up the majority.
