The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced a new date for the local government elections, now set for October 26, 2024.

This update was provided in a statement released by KANSIEC on Friday, Okay.ng reports.

The elections were initially scheduled for November 30, but the KANSIEC Chairman, Prof. Sani Malumfashi, explained during a press conference on Friday that the change was made in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the autonomy of local governments.

“In recognition and conformity with the recent Supreme Court decision, the mutual agreement between States and Federal Governments and upon the expiration of October deadline on Local Government Financial Autonomy, the Commission is justifiably impelled to reschedule the already scheduled Local Government Election to 26th October 2024 as against 30th November 2024,” Malumfashi stated.

He urged stakeholders to understand the necessity of the adjustment and to support the commission in its efforts to ensure a smooth electoral process.

According to the revised schedule, campaign activities are set to commence on September 1 and will conclude at midnight on October 26. Party primaries and the submission of candidate names to the commission will take place between September 3 and September 26.

The sale of nomination forms is slated to begin on September 15 and end on September 26, with the submission of completed forms scheduled for September 27 to October 8.

Malumfashi added that the verification of candidates by the commission and the submission of the names of political party agents will occur from October 9 to October 14.

The commission plans to announce the election results on Sunday, October 27, and has scheduled November 9 for any necessary rerun elections.
