The Lagos State Government has established a medical panel to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of Waheed Ayilara, the Akwa Ibom Commissioner of Police, who passed away at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on Thursday due to complications from prostate cancer, Okay.ng reports.

Ayilara, who had been deployed to the Akwa Ibom command in February 2024, underwent surgery at LASUTH shortly before his death. In a statement released on Saturday, Lagos Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, announced that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered a thorough investigation into the events surrounding Ayilara’s passing.

“In the light of the circumstances surrounding his passing, happening some hours after an apparently uneventful surgery, the ministry of health, following a directive from Mr. Governor, has constituted a medical panel to review the clinical circumstances leading to the death,” the statement read.

The panel, headed by LASUTH’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabanwo, has been tasked with submitting a comprehensive report within seven days.

“We share the grief and understand the anxiety that this news may have caused. We assure the public that the Lagos State Government is committed to ensuring a thorough investigation,” Abayomi added.

In his statement, Abayomi extended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s “heartfelt condolences” to the family of the deceased, acknowledging Ayilara’s distinguished service.

He noted that Ayilara was a dedicated officer whose exemplary leadership earned him widespread respect and admiration from both his colleagues and the communities he served.

“His death is a significant loss not only to his family and the police but also to the entire nation,” the commissioner said.
