The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has directed an investigation into the alleged detention of a Naval rating, Seaman Haruna Abbas, who is reported to have been held in custody for over six years without trial, Okay.ng reports.

The probe follows revelations made by Abbas’ wife during an appearance on a popular human rights radio program in Abuja. She alleged that her husband has been detained for more than six years on the orders of a senior Naval officer.

Reacting to the viral disclosure, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) issued a statement through its acting director of Defence Information, Brig-Gen Tukur Gusau, assuring the public of a thorough investigation.

“The DHQ has taken notice of a circulating video clip alleging the unjust incarceration of a Naval rating, Seaman Abbas Haruna, for six years,” the statement read. “The DHQ wishes to assure the public that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains committed to upholding justice, fairness, and the rule of law.”

Brig-Gen Gusau emphasized that while the military court-martial process is meticulous, it is designed to ensure fairness and justice in line with military procedures and Nigerian law.

In response to the viral claims, General Musa has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding Seaman Abbas’ prolonged detention. The CDS promised that the findings of the probe would be made public once concluded.

He further urged the public to remain patient and refrain from spreading unverified information while the investigation is underway.
