The Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, experienced protests on Thursday as tensions escalate ahead of the October 5, 2024, Local Government election, Okay.ng reports.

Large numbers of protesters gathered at the party’s secretariat, leading to security intervention to manage the crowd and traffic congestion in the area.

The unrest stems from concerns over the delay in releasing the 2023 Voters’ Register by the Independent National Electoral Commission to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.

A Federal High Court ruling on September 30, 2024, barred INEC from releasing the voters’ register to RSIEC due to legal challenges.

Despite this, Governor Siminalayi Fubara remains adamant that the election will proceed as planned. Fubara cited the Supreme Court’s previous ruling, which mandated that all states must have democratically elected local government executives, to support his position.
