The Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced that the Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State has officially commenced crude oil processing.

The development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to boost local refining capacity and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.

Femi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL, made the announcement on Tuesday, revealing that the refinery is set to operate at 60 percent capacity, processing 60,000 barrels per day (bpd).

“Today marks a monumental achievement for Nigeria as the Port Harcourt Refinery officially commences crude oil processing. This groundbreaking milestone signifies a new era of energy independence and economic growth for our nation,” Soneye said.

He extended congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NNPC Board, and the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mele Kyari, for their dedication to the transformative project.

“Together, we are reshaping Nigeria’s energy future,” Soneye added.

Soneye also confirmed that truck loading operations would begin on Tuesday, underscoring NNPCL’s commitment to strengthening the country’s refining capabilities.

Additionally, efforts are underway to bring the Warri Refinery back online soon.
