Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been reappointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second term.

The decision was announced following a General Council meeting of the organization on Monday.

Okonjo-Iweala’s second four-year term will begin on September 1, 2025, extending her leadership of the WTO, a position she first assumed in March 2021.

Her historic appointment marked her as the first African and the first woman to lead the global trade body.

The reappointment comes after strong backing from member countries, with 58 nations in the African Group of WTO advocating for her continued leadership more than a month ago.

In a notice to journalists, the WTO confirmed that its members unanimously approved Okonjo-Iweala’s reappointment.

“Her second four-year term, which was approved at a special General Council meeting, will begin on 1 September 2025,” the statement read.

“DG Okonjo-Iweala took office as Director-General in March 2021 and is the first African and the first woman to serve as head of the organization.”
