The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has refuted claims that the 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) old Port Harcourt Refinery has ceased operations.

The refinery, which resumed production in November 2024 after undergoing years of rehabilitation, remains fully operational, according to the NNPCL.

This clarification comes amidst reports alleging that operations at the refinery had stopped, leaving tanker drivers stranded.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL, described the reports as false and assured that loading operations are ongoing.

“The attention of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC, Limited has been drawn to reports in a section of the media alleging that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery, which was re-streamed two months ago, has been shut down,” Soneye said.

“We wish to clarify that such reports are totally false as the refinery is fully operational as verified a few days ago by former Group Managing Directors of NNPC. Preparation for the day’s loading operation is currently ongoing.”
