The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed a fire incident that razed several shanties in the Surulere area of Lagos.

In a statement released on Saturday, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, said the agency’s response team was alerted through the emergency toll-free lines 767 and 112 at 1:18 a.m. and promptly mobilized from its Onipanu base.

“Upon arrival at 01:31hrs, a row of makeshift shanty structures erected beside the canal was found to have been gutted by fire,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire started in one of the rooms and rapidly spread to adjacent structures.

Oke-Osanyintolu commended the combined efforts of emergency responders, which helped bring the fire under control and prevent further escalation.

“No casualties or injuries were recorded at the incident scene,” he confirmed.

“The fire has been totally extinguished. Dampening down, search, and rescue has been concluded.”
