The 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate for Lagos state, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, sounded the alarm on Monday over ongoing sand filling activities in Makoko, warning that tampering with natural water bodies could trigger severe flooding across Lagos mainland.

In a statement, Rhodes-Vivour strongly condemned the practice, emphasizing that the indiscriminate sandfilling of water bodies and wetlands is a major cause of flooding in Lagos.

He said that the current development plans could trigger “massive flooding of the Lagos mainland Local Government.”

The ongoing sandfilling in Makoko, a historic waterfront community famous for its stilt houses, has raised alarm among environmental experts and urban planners. While these activities are often carried out to create more developable land, they are facing growing scrutiny due to their potential environmental consequences.

“The sand filling activities in Makoko, a historic waterfront community known for its distinctive stilt houses, have sparked concerns among environmental experts and urban planners. These operations, typically conducted to create new developable land, are increasingly being scrutinized for their environmental impact.”
