President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the Federal University of Education, Kano, now honouring the late statesman, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, Nigeria’s distinguished former diplomat and prominent statesman.

In a statement released on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu said the institution will now be known as the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano, to immortalise the outstanding contributions of the late elder statesman to Nigeria and the international community.

Tinubu described Maitama Sule as a “remarkable patriot whose contributions to Nigeria’s unity, integrity, and development remain legendary.”

Maitama Sule, who served Nigeria in various capacities, was notably Nigeria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations, where he chaired the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid, playing a significant role in the global campaign against racial segregation in South Africa.

He was also the Chief Whip of Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives from 1954 to 1959, and Leader of Nigeria’s delegation to the Conference of Independent States.

His diplomatic and legislative engagements positioned him as a key figure in Nigeria’s early post-independence politics.

Onanuga noted in the statement:

“The Federal University of Education, Kano, initially owned by the Kano State Government, is one of the seven specialised universities of education now under the federal government. As a federal university, it continues to play a pivotal role in training teachers, which is essential for strengthening Nigeria’s education sector.”
