Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has broken his silence following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, which led to the suspension of his administration. In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Governor Fubara described the move as unconstitutional and a direct attack on the democratic rights of the people of Rivers State.
Addressing the people of the state, Governor Fubara expressed his disappointment over the decision, stating that his administration had consistently prioritized the rule of law, peace, and good governance since assuming office. He emphasized that Rivers State remains peaceful, secure, and stable under his leadership, with salaries being paid, critical projects ongoing, and the welfare of the people at the forefront of his administration’s agenda.
The governor recalled his administration’s efforts to resolve political disagreements, including implementing the terms of peace brokered by President Tinubu and complying with the Supreme Court’s judgment to restore normalcy in the state. He noted that these actions were taken in good faith to foster unity and stability, not for personal gain.
However, Governor Fubara lamented that the declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of his administration were unnecessary and unjustified. He argued that the reasons cited by the President, including political tensions and pipeline vandalism, do not meet the constitutional threshold for such extreme measures.
“The 1999 Constitution provides clear procedures for addressing emergencies, and the removal of elected officials is not one of them,” Governor Fubara stated. “This action sets a dangerous precedent that undermines our democracy and the will of the people.”
The governor urged the people of Rivers State to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding during this period. He assured them that his administration would explore all legal and constitutional avenues to challenge the decision and protect the democratic rights of the people.
“We are a resilient people, and together, we will overcome this challenge,” Governor Fubara declared. “Let us stand united in defense of our democracy and the progress we have achieved.”
He concluded by calling on all stakeholders, including the judiciary, civil society, and international observers, to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure that the rule of law prevails.
