Nigeria has inked a monumental 2,600-megawatt (MW) solar module supply agreement with LONGi Solar France SARL. This landmark deal, facilitated by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, marks one of the largest solar procurements in sub-Saharan Africa, according to Minister Uche Nnaji’s recent statement.

The agreement will fuel Nigeria’s ambitious Green Hydrogen Hub Project, strategically located within the Liberty Oil & Gas Free Trade Zone in Akwa Ibom State. This initiative aims to transform Nigeria into a regional powerhouse for clean energy production, leveraging its abundant solar resources to drive industrial growth, hydrogen exports, and sustainable mobility solutions.

“This is precision technology meeting raw African potential – the synergy is transformative,” remarked Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General & Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN). He highlighted the significance of deploying LONGi’s high-efficiency modules, ensuring optimal energy yield in Nigeria’s demanding climate. It’s a point I believe resonates with many Nigerians who have long desired a stable and sustainable energy source.

For context, this 2.6GW installation brings Nigeria within striking distance of global solar giants, such as China’s Midong Solar Park (3.5GW). This comparison underscores the scale of Nigeria’s ambition and its commitment to joining the global green energy transition.

The project’s implications extend far beyond mere energy production. The government projects over 20,000 direct jobs in engineering, logistics, research and development, and maintenance. Imagine the impact this will have on local communities, providing livelihoods and fostering economic stability.

Moreover, the solar-powered hydrogen hub will support industrial-scale green hydrogen production, fueling local industries, exports, and clean transport—particularly in the marine and heavy transport sectors. This strategic alignment with Nigeria’s blue economy, supporting maritime logistics and offshore energy transitions, is a testament to the project’s multifaceted benefits.

“Deploying LONGi’s high-efficiency modules in Nigeria’s hot, humid climate means more energy yield per square meter and faster return on investment,” stated Dr. Abdullahi. This efficiency is crucial, especially considering the project’s additional commitment to producing 500 metric tonnes per day of Green Medical Oxygen, significantly bolstering Nigeria’s healthcare capacity. This addresses a critical need, aligning with the federal government’s policy on oxygen supply and potentially saving countless lives.

Experts believe this project could fundamentally reshape Nigeria’s energy landscape, reducing its reliance on fossil fuels while driving economic diversification. For many Nigerians, the promise of reliable, clean energy is more than just a policy objective; it’s a necessity.

LONGi, a global leader in solar energy technology, brings its cutting-edge innovation to the project. The company’s world-record solar PV efficiency, with its silicon-perovskite tandem cells achieving a 34.6% conversion efficiency, ensures maximum energy yield. This efficiency translates to cost-effectiveness and high productivity, critical factors for long-term sustainability.

As Nigeria embarks on this ambitious journey, the potential for economic growth, job creation, and improved healthcare outcomes is undeniable. This project represents more than just a solar installation; it’s a beacon of hope for a cleaner, more prosperous future.
