The 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero has announced the cancellation of this year’s Sallah festivities, citing the need to maintain peace and security within the state. This decision was conveyed through a broadcast, where the Emir expressed his regret, but firmly emphasized that the safety of lives and property remained his paramount concern.

In his address, Emir Bayero explained that the decision stemmed from his commitment to protecting the people, given the prevailing circumstances. He stated that “Following the people’s mandate bestowed upon us and our commitment to their protection, we find it necessary to withdraw any arrangements made for the Sallah celebrations given the current situation.” He also acknowledged that this decision was made after consultations with respected religious leaders and other key stakeholders.

Furthermore, Emir Bayero addressed the significance of the Sallah Durbar, a cherished tradition, while stressing that it should not jeopardize peace and stability. He clarified, “Sallah Durbar is not a do-or-die affair for us. If it risks becoming a source of chaos, loss of lives, or destruction of property, then it is best to shelve it.” The Emir expressed his hope that this decision would contribute to lasting peace in Kano and the broader nation.

Finally, Emir Bayero extended his apologies to the people of Kano, urging them to understand and accept the decision in the interest of the state’s well-being. It is important to note that this decision was made in light of concerns regarding potential violence, due to the fact that Emir Bayero had notified police of his intension to hold a Durbar, while Muhammadu Sanusi, was planning a similiar event.”
