The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone A, Ikeja, has announced the seizure of N1.7 billion worth of contraband, including used vehicles and foreign rice, within the last four weeks. The seizures, totaling 82 interceptions, occurred across southwestern states, including the Oyo and Ogun border areas.

Customs Area Controller, Kola Oladeji, reported the confiscation of 3,832 bags of foreign rice, 27 used vehicles (Tokunbo), 14,820 liters of petrol, used clothing, charcoal, and 3,643 kilograms of cannabis sativa. Six suspects were arrested in connection with these seizures.

In addition, the unit recovered N72.4 million in revenue through demand notices issued for irregular consignment declarations. Oladeji emphasized the unit’s commitment to enforcing the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 to prevent revenue losses.

He acknowledged the officers’ dedication in achieving these seizures, stressing their resolve to combat illegal trans-border trade. The unit will continue public sensitization on the negative impact of smuggling and enforce compliance with government fiscal policy.

The seized cannabis sativa will be handed over to the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution, reflecting inter-agency cooperation. Oladeji noted the success of their “Swift Sting Operations” against smugglers and the streamlining of patrol teams to facilitate a business-friendly environment.
