The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to international airlines following an increase in complaints from passengers deported midway through their journeys.

In a statement released on Thursday, NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu, condemned the practice, describing it as distressing for passengers and damaging to Nigeria’s aviation sector.

“These actions, which involve the refusal of boarding or denial of entry at intermediate or transit stops due to visa and travel restrictions, are completely unacceptable,” Achimugu stated.

The regulatory body emphasized that airlines must ensure passengers are informed of any travel restrictions before departure. It cited the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), which mandates airlines and their agents to provide travelers with accurate and updated information regarding entry requirements before issuing tickets or allowing boarding.

“Passengers should not be put in a position where they are denied entry or returned to Nigeria only upon arrival at transit stops,” Achimugu added.

To address the issue, the NCAA announced immediate enforcement measures against non-compliant airlines.

“Effective immediately, any airline found engaging in such practices will face regulatory action, including fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties deemed appropriate,” he warned.

The NCAA reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigerian passengers and upholding professionalism within the aviation industry. It urged all airlines operating in the country to adhere strictly to regulations to prevent unnecessary hardship for travelers.
