The Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, is reportedly conducting security vetting on potential candidates for diplomatic roles in its 109 missions, comprising 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates worldwide, okay.ng reports.
Among the nominees undergoing vetting are former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former Lagos Deputy Governor Femi Pedro.
Sources indicate that the vetting process, which involves candidates reporting to their nearest DSS offices, focuses on verifying personal, educational, and professional histories.
Presidency officials confirmed that security checks are underway, with the final list expected by the end of April. “Only cleared candidates will be announced,” an official stated, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the process.
Another source explained, “The vetting is location-based. Nominees are providing detailed personal histories.”
Senior government officials revealed that while the full list remains confidential, prominent figures, including Fani-Kayode, Fola Adeola (founder of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc), and Femi Pedro, are among those being screened.
Officials attribute the vetting’s thoroughness to the need to prevent potential security issues and safeguard Nigeria’s international standing. “Background checks are crucial to avoid negative impacts on the country,” an official explained.
