May 29: Tinubu to Review Ministers’ Performance Amid Calls for Cabinet Shake-up

Ahead of his administration’s mid-term anniversary on May 29, President Bola Tinubu is set to receive a new performance report on his ministers from the Central Results Delivery and Coordination Unit (CDCU). Sources close to the presidency stated that the confidential scorecards, covering Q1 2025, are expected imminently.

The CDCU, under Hadiza Bala-Usman’s leadership, has been verifying ministries’ submitted project evidence through a secure portal, scoring them against the performance bonds signed at the October 2023 cabinet retreat.

An insider described many ministers’ performances as “average,” with only a handful, notably the Minister of Works, exceeding expectations. “Several others performed poorly in critical metrics,” the source added.

While no immediate sackings are expected before the anniversary, the report will enable President Tinubu to engage ministers on performance issues and possibly inform future cabinet reshuffles.

President Tinubu had made clear at the November 2023 Cabinet Retreat that ministers’ tenure depends on their performance: “If you are performing, nothing to fear. If no performance, you leave us.”

The CDCU’s previous reports have already influenced cabinet changes, including the October 2024 reshuffle that saw some ministers reassigned or removed.

Opposition voices from the PDP, NNPP, and Labour Party have criticized the administration’s handling of governance, security, and economic hardships, urging the President to take decisive action on underperforming ministers.
