The Nigerian government has expressed optimism about the country’s economic trajectory, attributing recent improvements to the comprehensive reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. This was conveyed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, during a meeting with the newly elected executives of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to the minister, while challenges persist, the government is making measurable strides in stabilizing and growing the economy. “The economy is not yet what we want it to be but we can see that there is a steady progression. The President has said over and over again that we are turning the corner. I know that many people will say it’s not yet El-dorado. Yes, I also agree but you cannot always say that there is no progress,” Idris said. He further noted that global rating agencies have begun to recognize Nigeria’s economic management with “some pass marks” and “upward ticks.”
Key reforms such as the removal of the fuel subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange rates have been instrumental in this progress. The minister also highlighted the government’s commitment to education, revealing that about 300,000 students are benefiting from the Students Loan Scheme, with tuition and upkeep costs covered by the federal government. “Because of this deliberate intentional policy of the government, over 300,000 Nigerian students that hitherto were out of school or could have been out of school, now have the opportunity to be in school because the government is paying for their tuition and upkeep. This is unprecedented,” he emphasized.
On security, Idris acknowledged ongoing challenges but pointed to significant successes in combating violent crime nationwide. He urged the media to support the Armed Forces by balancing coverage of attacks with reports of their achievements and sacrifices.
In response to the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ Law Reform Report, the minister committed to consulting with the Minister of Justice and establishing a committee within his ministry to examine the recommendations thoroughly.
Okay.ng reports that this interaction underscores the government’s intent to foster a freer media environment while continuing economic and security reforms.
