The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that reconstruction work has officially commenced at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, and urged travellers to adjust their plans to avoid missing flights.

In a travel advisory released on Friday, FAAN encouraged passengers to make allowances for potential disruptions during the construction period.

“To ensure a smooth travel experience, we kindly request that passengers leave early for the airport to avoid missing flights, obey all traffic instructions to aid traffic flow, and park vehicles properly in designated car park areas,” the advisory stated.

FAAN also asked that only those travelling visit the airport during the reconstruction phase due to limited space at the terminal.

“We appreciate your cooperation and understanding,” the agency added.

The project is part of the Federal Government’s N900 billion aviation sector upgrade approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on August 1. The centrepiece of the plan is the complete rehabilitation and modernisation of Terminal One of MMIA.

Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, explained that the project will involve stripping the terminal down to its structural base and rebuilding all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to meet international standards.

The Lagos airport rehabilitation will cost N712.25 billion and is projected to be completed in 22 months.

The MMIA is Nigeria’s busiest airport, handling millions of passengers annually.
