Global tech giant Google has announced a landmark initiative aimed at accelerating digital learning and innovation across Africa by offering free access to its premium AI plan, Google AI Pro, for university students in six countries: Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

The offer, unveiled on Monday, grants eligible students aged 18 and above a 12-month complimentary subscription to Google’s most advanced AI suite, powered by its cutting-edge Gemini 2.5 Pro model.

The initiative is designed to help students enhance their learning, research, and creativity while building the AI skills needed for the future workforce.

“We are seeing a new wave of innovation in Africa, driven by the energy and ingenuity of our young people,” said Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa. “By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them to not only excel in their studies but also to become critical builders and shapers of the future. This offer is about democratizing access to technology and giving African students the skills to compete and lead on a global stage.”

The Google AI Pro plan includes a comprehensive suite of tools tailored for students’ academic and creative needs. Through Gemini 2.5 Pro, learners can access features such as:

  • Guided Learning — for in-depth research, code debugging, and step-by-step academic assistance.
  • Deep Research — an advanced feature that compiles and cites reports from hundreds of online sources within minutes.
  • NotebookLM — to help organize notes, summarize ideas, and enhance collaborative projects.
  • Veo 3 — a text-to-video tool that transforms prompts or images into high-quality short videos for presentations and class projects.
  • 2TB of Google Cloud Storage — across Drive, Gmail, and Photos for coursework, research data, and creative portfolios.

How to Apply

Eligible students can verify their university status and activate the 12-month free plan at gemini.google/students between October 7 and December 9, 2025.

The process requires identity verification and a linked payment method, though no charge will be applied.

The initiative extends Google’s long-running investment in Africa’s digital ecosystem through programs like Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and Digital Skills for Africa, which have collectively trained millions of people across the continent.
