The Dangote Refinery has announced plans to expand its production capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, positioning it as the largest single-train refinery in the world.
Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, made this known during a press briefing held in Lagos on Sunday. The billionaire industrialist was joined by the Chairman of First Bank, Mr. Femi Otedola, at the event.
Dangote explained that the expansion would further strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global oil and gas sector and reduce dependency on imported petroleum products.
“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day,” he said. “Upon completion, this will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing the Jamnagar Refinery in India.”
According to him, construction work on the expansion would commence immediately, engaging about 65,000 workers, with 85 percent of them being Nigerians.
Okay News reports that Dangote also disclosed plans to increase the refinery’s power generation capacity from 500 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts. He stated that the facility would now produce Euro 6 standard fuel, an upgrade from the current Euro 5 specification.
The businessman further revealed that the refinery would be listed on the Nigerian Exchange in 2026, giving citizens the opportunity to invest in the company.
Dangote expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his continuous support of the refinery project and reaffirmed his commitment to completing the expansion within three years.
“This is another milestone for Nigeria and Africa. The expansion will help create more jobs, increase our refining capacity, and promote energy self-sufficiency,” he added.
