The family of Nigeria’s former President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari has announced the passing of his last surviving wife, Hajiya Sutura Shehu Shagari, who died on Monday afternoon after a prolonged illness. She was 89 years old.

The news was confirmed in a statement issued by the former president’s eldest son and Sarkin Mafaran Shagari, Captain Bala Shagari (rtd.), who described the late matriarch as a woman of “grace, humility, and quiet strength.”

“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Hajiya Sutura Shagari, the last surviving wife of the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, GCFR, Turakin Sokoto,” the statement read. “Hajiya Sutura was an embodiment of grace, humility, and quiet strength who lived a life of dignity.”

Okay News reports that the late Hajiya Sutura passed away around 3 p.m. on Monday in Sokoto State, where she had been receiving care for an undisclosed illness.
